Being an intern at SiriusXM has been the most hands-on experience I have had from an internship so far. I have had the pleasure of working with Joe Madison at The Black Eagle, and his staff has treated me like an employee instead of an intern. The team will let you know when something has been done right, and will give you constructive criticism when it isn’t. Everyone on staff supports one another and comes together to get whatever task needs to be completed.
Being a journalism major has helped me in radio because I am responsible for researching news and information at a fast pace. I know what to look for and where to find it so that Joe Madison can deliver it over the air. Working with Joe Madison is unique because he has a live show every morning, Monday through Friday. I am responsible for screening calls, recording and converting audio that is on the computer to be broadcast on air, as well as managing social media during the hours of the show. My favorite part of the internship takes place during the last hour of the show when I operate the sound board. I control the levels of all of the microphones, callers and music, and I communicate with Joe Madison about information and time and chip in on discussions he is talking about over the air.
The SiriusXM human resources department also does a great job of bringing the interns together every couple of weeks for a “snack and learn” to discuss what each of us is doing. We also have an online intern radio show, where we discuss what we all do, trending topics and popular places in the city for those who aren’t from the area.
